What’s the best piece of work advice you’ve ever received? The worst?
That's what we asked ([link removed]) some recent attendees of Poynter's Leadership Academy for Women in Media.
Sam Nicles, senior social producer at theSkimm, said she loved the advice "to fake it until you make it."
"Just go for it," said Melina Olma, founder and CEO, Cultura Diplomática, of the best advice she's ever gotten. "Make a list, and just go for it."
Ellen London, managing editor of GBH News, said the worst piece of work-related advice she ever got was to wait, "that the universe will somehow magically find you when an opportunity comes up."

How to Improve Your Coverage of LGBTQ+ Communities
Online resources
As the Trans Legislation Tracker ([link removed]) and the ACLU ([link removed]) note, the United States is experiencing a surge in anti-trans legislation in 2023. Journalists can tell nuanced, informed stories about transgender and gender non-conforming people using resources from Poynter.
Thanks to a grant from the Gill Foundation, our Poynter newsroom is covering LGBTQ+ issues, like "Trans and gender-fluid kids are under attack. How can we tell their stories without furthering harm?" We have to stop assuming people understand the mission, ethics and processes behind our work in journalism. We can’t let ourselves get lumped in with perceptions of “the media.” Instead, we need to actively work to earn trust from our communities by telling them why we’re worthy of their time, trust and support.
