On June 25, 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court gutted a key provision of the Voting Rights Act declaring, incorrectly, that federal oversight of voting practices in jurisdictions with a history of discrimination was no longer needed. Without those protections, many states have been free to pass and implement discriminatory voting policies.
Since that Supreme Court decision, at least 29 states have passed 94 restrictive voting laws, putting the freedom to vote in jeopardy.
Congress can fix this by passing the Freedom to Vote Act (FTVA) and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (VRAA).

The FTVA and John Lewis VRAA would ensure that every eligible American has access to the ballot box and protection against anti-democratic attacks in state legislatures across the nation.
Every American deserves equal participation in our political process, and equal access to voting is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy. Members of Congress must fulfill their obligation to protect the freedom to vote by enacting legislation that will fully restore and strengthen the Voting Rights Act.
