Daily Kos Evening Brief

The Republican House is on fire, and there isn’t a firefighter among them

Will Trump’s loose lips literally sink ships?

Special counsel Jack Smith may have new questions for Donald Trump after “60 Minutes Australia” released audio recordings of Australian billionaire Anthony Pratt talking about his alleged conversations with Trump. Pratt, who is also a Mar-a-Lago member, said Trump blabbed to him about everything from nuclear submarines to military strikes (and even made pig-headed comments about his own wife, Melania). The revelations in these recordings may end up prompting a full-blown espionage investigation.

The speaker race: cauldron of chaos, danger to national security

Over this past weekend, the Republican National Committee was busy trying to push a narrative that President Joe Biden was taking a weekend at the beach while the world burns, but even Fox News shut that narrative down. Former Rep. Liz Cheney hit the Sunday morning talk shows to blame the Republican speaker drama squarely on former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Back on the Hill, resentment and chaos are brewing in the GOP as the speaker race intensifies, even as its intraparty drama and squabbling endangers national and global security. The leaderless House Republicans are, according to one of their own members, "dangerous" and "embarrassing."
