Intimidation tactics. Threats of violence.

Bullying as a strategy is something straight out of a mobster’s playbook — but it’s all too common in our politics these days, ushered in by Trump and his band of MAGA extremists.

And it’s been front and center in the recent drama on Capitol Hill, as Republicans fail to elect a new speaker of the House. When Trump’s hand-picked candidate, Jim Jordan, fell short in the tally, those who opposed him were harassed. Loved ones received threatening phone calls.

Those threats failed (so far). But way too often, they work.

We now know that several members of Congress didn’t vote their conscience in the Trump impeachment proceedings after the January 6th attack, out of fear for their safety. And across the country, dozens of elections officials — typically nonpartisan public servants — have chosen to quit their jobs rather subject themselves to nonstop intimidation.

Violence has no part in a functioning democracy. But Trump and his cronies have embraced it. It’s part of what they stand for. It’s how they hold power.

The only way we purge this ugly trend in American politics is to crush (at the ballot box) the people who espouse it.
