Daily Docket — Monday, Oct. 23

Here are some updates from today.

  • Following the failed votes on Reps. Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), nine new Republicans are vying to be the next speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. All nine of these congressmen supported efforts to disenfranchise millions of voters after the 2020 election. Learn about their records on voting and democracy here.

    • House Republicans are expected to meet to discuss their next nominee at 6:30 p.m. EDT.

  • Today is the deadline to register to vote in Pennsylvania! There's major elections for judges this year, including a race that will decide who sits on the state Supreme Court — and young voters can make a big impact. Register to vote here.

Here’s what to expect coming up.

  • Be on the lookout tomorrow for a piece from Democracy Docket’s founder Marc Elias discussing how Michigan Republican lawmakers are trying to resurrect the fringe and rejected independent state legislature theory and what to do about it.

ICYMI, listen to our latest episode of Defending Democracy. In the podcast episode that dropped on Friday, Marc and Paige break down congressional redistricting litigation in five southern states and the prospects of getting fair districts in place for 2024.
