John,

In the year 2023, it is still legal for property owners to discriminate against LGBTQ+ people in 28 U.S. states.

In fact, here is the reality for LGBTQ+ folks as of right now:

[Refusal Of Service] Businesses like restaurants, hair salons, and rideshares could legally refuse service if you are LGBTQ+. [Housing] LGBTQ+ Americans could be evicted, denied home loans, and turned away from rental properties just because of who they are. [Medical Care] LGBTQ+ Americans could be denied service by healthcare providers and pharmacies just because of who they are.

These are freedoms that are missing for LGBTQ+ Americans — and we know the realities are even worse for Black LGBTQ+ individuals.

This is why we want to take this month to uplift the Equality Act, a critical piece of legislation that would ensure basic freedom and protections LGBTQ+ folks across the country. Take a quick moment to write your legislator and demand they prioritize the Equality Act >>

Since our creation, Black Lives Matter has been about LGBTQ+ lives -- because all Black lives matter, period. It's a priority for us to always put LGBTQ+ voices at the center of the conversation, and it's important that we highlight the intersectionalities of being Black and LGBTQ+ in our movement.

Passage of the Equality Act would ensure that our country is able to move toward a more inclusive future. It aims to combat discrimination and provide protections for the LGBTQ+ community -- because no one deserves to live in fear of hate.

The Equality Act was reintroduced on June 21, 2023, in the House and in the Senate. It's been 4 months since, and we need action now. Demand your legislator support the Equality Act by taking a minute to send them a letter >>
