Hello,

In this week’s edition, I explain how learning takes place when you confront the tragedy and malevolence in your life. Then, I talk with Daily Wire co-founder Jeremy Boreing about the launch of Bentkey, a streaming platform for kids entertainment, and about Hollywood's transcendental-to-political inversion. From the archives, I revisit a conversation about the hope Jesus brought to the world through his life, death, and resurrection.

Advice

Face The Tragedy And Malevolence In Your Life

The solution to the problem of tragedy and malevolence is the willingness to face them. Who would ever guess that? It is a completely paradoxical suggestion. Why does it work? Because the more you confront the two of them, the more you grow — and maybe you can grow so that you are actually larger than the chaos and the malevolence itself.

If you ask what the evidence is for that, the answer is easy: That’s what people do. That is how we learn. Every time you expose your child to something new — a playground, for example — they are exposed to chaos and malevolence. There is more to it than that, obviously, because kids play, they promote each other, and they form friendships, but in the playground itself, there is the complexity of the social structure and the malevolence of the bully. You throw your kid in there, tell them to adapt, and they do. That is not trivial. The playground is a complicated place, but the kid can adapt.

How much can you scale that up? Can you scale that up from the chaos and order and malevolence of the playground to chaos and order and malevolence itself? That is the question. I don’t think there is any reason to answer that in the negative.

The Space Where Imagination Exists And The Spirit Continues

Dreams are precognitive in some sense. This is how I think it works: We are watching people act all the time in small groups, in large groups, as individuals, in fiction — all the time. So we have this vast knowledge of embodied action. Now, that is not propositionalized. It is imagistic. It is like the movie that runs in your head. It is like a dream, and we cannot propositionalize all that. That is partly what a great storyteller does; [a storyteller] takes a great set of images that reflect a compelling pattern of behavior and turn it into verbalized propositions.

In this episode, I sit down with screenwriter, director, and co-founder of The Daily Wire, Jeremy Boreing. We discuss the landmark launch of the Bentkey platform, the bizarre inversion of Hollywood from the transcendental to the political, and the folly of leftist populism at the expense of values, culture, and your children.

Christianity As A Way Of Being

A couple years ago, I had an intriguing conversation about finding something deeply meaningful enough to justify suffering. Bishop Barron explains the Good News: Jesus was put to death and raised from the dead by God, bringing hope to the world. We talk about that hope, the sacrifice that was made, and God’s love in the world.
