Imagine it’s 1991. The internet has just been made available for the first time. George H. W. Bush is president. Beauty and the Beast has just been released in theaters. And, on this very day 32 years ago, Clarence Thomas became a Supreme Court justice. He has spent his Supreme Court career attacking our rights—from our freedom to vote to affirmative action to abortion. Even though Clarence Thomas has already had more than three decades to do the right wing’s bidding, his term isn’t ending anytime soon. No one deserves power for life. That’s especially clear now. The current Supreme Court is the most conservative court we’ve experienced in a century. And Clarence’s Thomas’s threat to our fundamental freedoms is as old as the internet you are using to read this email on. Unless we act, Thomas and his extremist right-wing counterparts could stay in the majority until (at least) 2065. That’s too long to wait. Enter the Supreme Court Tenure Establishment and Retirement Modernization (TERM) Act. The TERM Act is a bold piece of legislation that would create 18-year terms for justices, establish regular Supreme Court nominations during every presidency, and create a Court that better represents the American people. Every major democracy in the world has judicial term limits. It’s time we join them. The cherry on top? Clarence Thomas would be the first to cycle off. Thanks for all that you do. Sami & Chloe
