Jack, three weeks into their historic strike, United Auto Workers (UAW) secured a key demand from GM to include its electric vehicle battery manufacturing facilities in UAW’s contract! This victory demonstrates the power of labor in leading the just transition to a clean energy economy.

The Big Three automakers are getting historic federal support to build electric vehicles (EV) in the U.S., thanks to Democrats passing the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). EVs are selling at record high rates, with billions of dollars in investments pledged to support EV manufacturing jobs around the country. It’s a good time to be in the automaking business; and a good time to ensure automaking jobs are good jobs.
Union jobs outperform non-union roles in pay, benefits, and workplace safety—earning 20% more than non-union positions, on average. Coupling investments in clean energy with strong labor standards will also help reduce income, racial, and gender inequality by increasing compensation, providing training, and ensuring fair and safe workplaces.
UAW workers are demanding the future we all deserve. One where the new clean economy ends rampant corporate greed and unchecked corporate pollution, while allowing our families and communities to thrive.

When Democrats passed the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), and the CHIPS and Science Act, they provided an opportunity to create millions of good-paying union jobs while simultaneously addressing climate change, improving public health, and helping tackle income and racial injustice.
Striking United Auto Workers (UAW) are proving in real time that unions are key to ensuring marginalized and displaced workers benefit from robust labor standards and protections even as technology and priorities shift. Many thought that an agreement to unionize workers at electric vehicle plants would be impossible. UAW is fighting to ensure workers aren't left behind and is winning.
Our clean economy must be built strategically to ensure that we are building a better future for working people and communities. By ensuring new jobs are unionized, we can reduce income, racial, and gender inequality—creating a cleaner, more prosperous, and equitable economy.
