John,
The United States Postal Service and our Social Security system have a lot in common.
They are simple, universal programs that are part of the fabric of American life, connecting all of us, and guaranteeing a bare minimum of service for everyone.
And Wall Street would kill to privatize them.
Trump crony Louis DeJoy was made Postmaster General to dismantle the USPS and sell off the pieces to Wall Street.
Sign the petition: Congress must unleash the USPS and allow it to do more!
In 2006, Congress passed a law that prohibited the USPS from offering new services and forced them to prefund retirement accounts for future employees who hadn’t even been born. Recently, Congress repealed the prefunding mandate, but stopped short of authorizing new services.
The USPS has government-owned buildings in almost every zip code in the country, and a rapidly-expanding fleet of electric vehicles. The Post Office could become a one-stop hub for seniors. It could:
Provide a place for public services that are as simple as buying a book of stamps, like filling an EBT card, buying a bus pass, and offering wifi.
Create a public banking option, as existed up until the 1960s, through “postal banking” that provides many of the same services as predatory lenders.
Use the USPS delivery routes for census outreach, pharmacy delivery, or wellness checks for seniors.
And more!
Louis DeJoy wants to shrink the USPS, not grow it. That’s why he keeps raising prices and slowing service. Congress can fight back!
Sign now: Unleash the USPS!
In solidarity,
Alex Lawson Social Security Works
