The State Department is accepting comments on its fee reduction for the renunciation of US citizenship. We can explain that reducing the need for renunciation would be better. View in browser

Dear John,

The U.S. Department of State is requesting comments on its proposal to reduce the fee for citizenship renunciation from $2350 to $450.
Will you please comment on this reduction and note that the number of renunciations would decrease if residence-based taxation was introduced? You can find a draft comment below.

To make a comment:

1. Go to the Federal Register

2. Click on the big green button labeled "Submit a Formal Comment".

3. Provide your comment before November 1, 2023. As the proposal regards the renunciation fee, you do need to mention that, but then you can absolutely share the difficulties of citizenship-based taxation. Here is a draft comment that you can use as the basis for your comments. Please personalize!

The fee reduction for renouncing American citizenship is a welcome step, but we should really be trying to reduce the onerous taxation and regulatory burdens that are driving overseas Americans to renounce their citizenship in the first place.

We urge the State Department to support overseas Americans by making Congress aware that the United States is an outlier in its practice of citizenship-based taxation, and that moving to residence-based taxation would decrease the number of citizenship renunciations.

In addition to double taxation, overseas Americans are subjected to the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, which violates Americans' constitutional right to privacy and makes it impossible for overseas Americans to have a normal financial life.

Removing the unique and onerous taxation and regulatory burdens imposed on Americans abroad would significantly reduce the number of citizenship renunciations.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Republicans Overseas
