Statement on the 2020 Primary Election Results
ORANGE COUNTY, CA – Hon. Fred M. Whitaker, Chairman of the Republican Party of Orange County, released the following statement on the 2020 Primary Election results.
"On Tuesday night the waters of the blue wave began to recede. This was the first major test of the 2020 general election and Republicans showed that we will take back Orange County.
Republicans outpaced Democrats in voter turnout despite not having a competitive primary for President. 26,931 more Republicans voted than Democrats in the primary election. There are still 158,201 ballots left to count but the results are promising for Republicans.
In the race to win back the House of Representatives none of the four 2018 Democrats received more than 50% of the vote in their districts. A majority of voters rejected them. Young Kim (CA-39), Michelle Steel (CA-48), Greg Raths (CA-45) and Brian Maryott (CA-49) are our Republican nominees in our targeted congressional races. The pathway to restoring the House of Representatives is through Orange County. Our candidates, our volunteers, and our donors will make it happen.
Our state legislative candidates for Senate and Assembly dominated the night. Senator Moorlach, Senator Chang, Assemblyman Chen and Assemblyman Choi had impressive leads against their Democrat opponents. In the 73rd District Mayor Laurie Davies was the top vote getter with a more than 6% lead above the second place Democrat. In the 72nd district former Senator Janet Nguyen took the top spot with Assemblyman Tyler Diep in a tight race for second which may result in Republicans taking the top two spots for November. In the 74th Mayor Diane Dixon has a slight lead over Kelly Ernby but their combined Republican vote is higher than the incumbent Democrat Cottie Petrie-Norris.
On the local level Supervisor Don Wagner was reelected by almost 10 points ahead of the Democrat and Supervisor Andrew Do has an over 24 point lead over the two Democrats battling to advance to the November runoff. We held our Republican majority on the Board of Supervisors. We also maintained our 4-1 majority on the Orange County Board of Education with big wins by Ken Williams and Tim Shaw.
I want to thank every Republican candidate on the ballot. Running for office is not easy and in victory or defeat these candidates made our party stronger. If you passionately volunteered for a candidate who is not advancing to the general election - we ask you to join our shared fight to defeat the Democrats in November.
Our impressive victories last night were the result of the hard work and dedication of our volunteers and campaigns. After 2018 the renewed energy we saw on the campaign trail translated into a big night for Orange County Republicans. The fight to take back our county is far from over. The next eight months will require nothing less than everything we have.
To win in November our field and ground game must increase, as the number of voters will increase. In the coming days we will be announcing the Trump Victory Leadership Initiative training in Orange County as we partner with the California Republican Party and Republican National Committee. We need each of you to be fully trained and deployed volunteers in your neighborhoods.
The blue/green wave of Democrat money in 2018 temporarily knocked Orange County Republicans around but 2020 is the year we put Democrats down for the count."
