Don't Let the Trump Administration Silence Our Voices
Dear John,
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) ensures that the public has a voice in federal agency decisions that may impact the environment. This crucial law has empowered hundreds of millions of Americans to participate in the federal decision-making process. Now, the Trump administration is attempting to silence public input in reviews of dangerous and harmful projects such as drilling on public lands and clearcutting forests. These proposals put wildlife and habitat in all 50 states at risk.
NEPA requires that government agencies assess the environmental effects of their decisions and consider available options. Further, it provides the public a chance to receive notice, voice concerns, and ask questions during the process. In many cases, without NEPA, the public would be severely limited in its opportunity to weigh in on potentially dirty and dangerous projects--from those in our own neighborhoods to those in the nation's truly wild places. NEPA promotes an inherently democratic process. It informs and empowers communities while demanding government accountability and transparency. Through implementation of the NEPA process, mitigation actions that would not have otherwise been taken have helped to protect wildlife across the country.
NEPA is the people's environmental law. It is urgent that we do everything in our power to stop the silencing of your voice in favor of corporate polluters. The Trump administration's proposed changes to NEPA put industry profits before the public's concerns, limit the scope and timeframe of environmental impacts that agencies must consider, and allow companies to conduct their own reviews--destroying the transparency that NEPA is meant to uphold. Further, these proposed changes would ban consideration of a project's potential climate impacts.
