Hi,
Trump’s head of the U.S. Postal Service, Louis DeJoy, is still in power.
And DeJoy’s crusade to privatize the post office continues — a gift to
Wall Street and big corporations. But there’s something our lawmakers can
do about it.
Congress can counter DeJoy’s privatization plan by allowing the post
office to vastly expand its products and services — unlocking new revenue
and strengthening a USPS that is critical for all Americans, especially
rural and Tribal communities.

Congress could act and allow the USPS to add new services including
everything from bus and subway passes to postal banking, from WiFi access
in parking lots to paying off a parking ticket. Delivery services could
include checking in on seniors, census outreach and grocery or pharmacy
delivery. Post offices could offer verification for social security and
EBT cards, and even electric vehicle charging stations.
DeJoy’s tenure has been a disaster for USPS workers and customers. Trump
appointed DeJoy in 2018 to oversee privatization of the postal service.
Since then, DeJoy has cut postal worker staffing by over 30 million hours
just this year, and dramatically reduced wages for two thirds of rural
mail carriers.^1 And service cuts have been felt especially hard in rural
and Indigenous communities, where broadband is scarce and for-profit
delivery companies often don't provide service.^2
The list of possibilities for USPS expansion is long, and it’s necessary
for Congress to free the postal services from unnecessary restrictions to
counter DeJoy’s privatization plan.
DeJoy has plans to keep cutting the USPS, and to make life more miserable
for workers.^4 Congress can take him, and the vestiges of the Trump
administration, on and empower the post office.
