John,
The client list was just leaked for Clearview, the shady facial recognition surveillance company infamous for scraping basically everyone’s personal photos from the Internet without our knowledge or permission.1
The list is terrifying. Not only are more than 2,000 government and law enforcement agencies using this invasive spyware, but there are a ton of brand name companies on the list too, like Verizon, Walmart, Macy’s, AT&T, and the NBA.
What the heck is Verizon doing with facial recognition surveillance technology? Using it to spy on Internet freedom and privacy activists? Or on their employees? Or something else?
The truth is, we have no idea, because these companies have been experimenting with this software in total secrecy.
We’re going to put a stop to that. We’re launching a major new campaign to stop big corporations from using facial recognition to violate our rights. Will you chip in?
If we don’t stop this, you’ll be watched by facial recognition everywhere you go: to the store, in restaurants, on college campuses—everywhere.
But we know we can stop this. Our campaign already got UCLA, one of the biggest universities in the US, to abandon its plan to implement facial recognition on campus. And working with Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine we got big concert promoters like Ticketmaster, Coachella, and SXSW to back away from surveillance software.
Our campaign to stop corporations from using facial recognition will have three main components:
-
We’ll launch a scorecard and put pressure on brand name companies that are using or considering using facial recognition, starting with the Clearview client list
-
We’ll build a massive grassroots coalition of organizations from across the political spectrum calling on companies to stay away from this invasive technology
-
And we’ll mobilize the Internet to force lawmakers to work toward legislation that bans corporations from using facial recognition on us without our knowledge and consent
We’re good at this. We know how to do it. But we need to raise the funds to make it possible. Will you rush a donation today to help launch this urgent campaign?
Thanks so much for all you do,
Evan at Fight for the Future
