Now is the time to strengthen and expand Social Security, not cut it! I want to hear from you. How has Social Security impacted you and your loved ones? Share your story here.
Dear Friends,
Social Security is the nation’s number one anti-poverty program for the elderly and children, and more veterans rely on disability benefits through Social Security than they do the VA. Today, there are more than 5 million Americans who worked all their lives and get a below-poverty level check from Social Security. My bill, Social Security 2100, would enhance benefits across-the-board for the first time in more than fifty years, offers 23 million Americans a tax break, and repeals WEP and GPO to make sure public servants can receive the benefits that they earned.
If we pass Social Security 2100, we can both enhance benefits and extend the program’s solvency for years to come. However, many of my Republican colleagues have proposed benefit cuts, including raising the retirement age. Most recently, nearly every House Republican voted for a 30% cut to Social Security Administration funding and a fast-track commission that would meet behind closed doors to negotiate cuts to the program.
When the Republicans tell us they want to cut Social Security, we must believe them. During this week’s Social Security Subcommittee hearing, I spoke about the devastating impact these cuts would have on our nation’s Social Security beneficiaries. You can watch my remarks below.
