“The health sector is about to fail. It’s imminent,” says Dr. Nedal Abed, an orthopedic surgeon with Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). “Most of the wounded patients are civilians—children and women. There are no safe places outside.” He is currently working at Al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s main surgical facility. The hospital has a maximum capacity of 700 beds, but recently admitted more than 3,000 wounded people.
Our colleagues are witnessing a collapse of the patient care system in Gaza. Hospitals are overwhelmed. Injured patients are arriving with complex trauma wounds, fractures, burns, and crushed limbs.
In Gaza, Afghanistan, Ukraine, and beyond, our teams deliver lifesaving care regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, or politics. Our independence is made possible by the support of our individual donors—people like you—who enable us to respond to conflicts and crises around the world.
Hear directly from our colleagues living and working in Gaza:
Our teams are preparing medical and humanitarian supplies to support hospitals and civilians in Gaza. We reiterate our call on all parties in the conflict to guarantee the safety of civilians and medical facilities, and for the continued delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza.
We remain committed to providing lifesaving care to people affected by this crisis while also responding to multiple other emergencies around the world.
P.S. If you recently made a donation to support our emergency response work, it may have crossed paths with our email. We sincerely thank you for your generous support of medical humanitarian aid around the world, and hope that this additional email serves as an important update from the ground.
