Experience the magic of the past by trick-or-treating through history.

Our Halloween at the Museum celebration is one of our biggest events of the year! Each year, more than a thousand community members come to the museum to experience history brought to life. Meet characters from Wyoming?s past, get up close to specimens and objects from the museum collection, check out Air Force vehicles and equipment, and enjoy fun activities like a sheepherding race and a ?bacon toss.?

Every kid who participates gets a bag of trick-or-treat candy, generously provided by Smile Doctors of Cheyenne [ [link removed] ] and Walmart on Del Range Blvd [ [link removed] ].

Celebrate your loved ones that have passed on and learn about the cultural traditions, folk art, and history of the Day of the Dead!?

Across Latin America it is believed that the passageway between the human world and the spirit world opens each year on November 1 and 2. For two days, deceased loved ones can come back and visit their living relatives, who celebrate with music, dancing, food, art, and offerings. Join us on November 4th between 10 am and 2 pm to:

* Learn about and create your own delicious sugar skulls (or ?Calaveras?);
* Create beautiful Papel Picado (or ?pecked paper?) decorations to take home;
* Watch dance performances from Las Angelitas Unidas y los Rayos del Sol;
* Discover how the annual monarch butterfly migration creates an important connection between the living and the dead;
* Play a Loteria game to learn some Spanish words;
* See altars (or ?Ofrendas?) set up by community members and students;
* Create paper cup lanterns for your own altars;
* Eat delicious foods from local vendors!

Family Days are generously sponsored by Scheels in Johnstown, CO [ [link removed] ]. Thanks to their support, these events are always free and open to everyone!

Not familiar with GCAE? This exhibition is a biennial juried exhibit that celebrates the work of Wyoming artists. It was established in 2000 under an initiative by Governor Geringer and is organized by the Wyoming State Museum and the Wyoming Arts Council.

This exhibition is also the primary avenue for the state museum to acquire modern Wyoming art for its Capitol and permanent collections. The art for the Capitol collection is selected by the State?s five elected officials and representatives from other state agencies. While the museum?s curators select purchase awards for the Museum?s permanent art collection. All other artwork in the exhibition is available for sale to the general public.

The juried exhibition will be displayed from February 9 through August 10 at the Wyoming State Capitol in Cheyenne. This year?s juror is Terri Porta from Billings, Montana.

Questions may be directed to Mariah Emmons, Museum Registrar, at (307)631-3368 or [email protected].

New Education Programs

Available for teachers locally and around the world!

________________________________________________________________________

The Wyoming State Museum is proud to announce two new education programs for schools around the country!

We've just launched our "What Fossils Tell Us" field trip for 3rd grade science standards and our "Rock Cycle" field trip for middle school science standards! Like all our education programs, they are 100% free, super fun, and can be taught at the museum or virtually - in any classroom in the world.

WHAT FOSSILS TELL US

How do paleontologists and paleoartists use the evidence that fossils provide to learn about dinosaurs and create paleoart? What clues can fossils tell us about animals and plants that lived long before humans? What can they tell us about Earth's habitats? During this interactive program, your students will use fossils, technology, and art to answer these questions.

THE ROCK CYCLE

This program will deep dive into the process of the Rock Cycle! Learn all about the three types of rocks, where you can find them, how they're made, and how they change into each other! Students who visit the museum for this program will also get hands-on with different rocks, explore our new geology lab, and create the rock cycle out of starbursts!?
