John — If we fail to learn from history, we doom ourselves to repeat it. Over the many years I’ve spent defending our democracy from MAGA charlatans like Donald Trump, that history has weighed heavily on my mind. It’s high time that we act to prevent another president from abusing the office like he did. The Watergate scandal broke the public’s trust in the White House, and the American people rightly feared that future presidents might abuse their office once again just like Nixon did. Congress took action to increase accountability and restore checks and balances in our government. Legislators passed a series of landmark reforms — the post-Watergate reforms — to prevent future presidents from abusing their office. And John, after the damage inflicted by Donald Trump on our country, I’ve been leading the charge to pass our own “post-Watergate” reforms, the Protecting Our Democracy Act, to ensure that no president can get away with Trump’s abuses of office ever again.
Two impeachments, an insurrection, and rampant election denialism have severely tested our democracy over the past few years. I’ve been on the frontlines, investigating the perpetrators while serving on the January 6th Committee and doing everything in my power to hold them accountable. I didn’t shy away from those fights, I threw myself in. These actions have shown that we cannot take our democracy for granted. That’s why I introduced the Protecting Our Democracy Act — to ensure that no future president can do the kind of damage that Donald Trump inflicted on our country. This legislation will help us do three important things:
This isn’t a Democratic or Republican issue. Or at least it shouldn't be. This is a nonpartisan, pro-democracy effort — designed to strengthen our democracy for future generations. And I intend to keep fighting for it in the U.S. Senate.
Thank you for your commitment to our democracy. — Adam
