John,
We can’t believe we’re saying this again.
There is still a real possibility of a government shutdown, which would have disastrous effects on millions of Americans. Congress needs to enact yet another funding package by November 17 at the latest, or the government will shut down, even though a temporary agreement was made in October to prevent a shutdown.
The lack of a Speaker of the House has cost us valuable time. Congress needs to get to work right away and agree on a long-term budgetary solution and avoid a shutdown.
We came far too close last month, so you’ve probably heard the vast consequences a reckless shutdown can have. Non-essential federal employees would be furloughed. Those deemed essential would work without pay. Low-income families would be impacted by the suspension of programs like the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Funding for federal defense, veterans' benefits, public health, federal law enforcement, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, interest payments to the federal government, and other programs would all dwindle.
Our representatives should work for the people, not personal interests or corporations. Use your voice and demand they act now to stop a disastrous shutdown from happening.
Thank you for taking action,
Democratic Values
