Dear John

It’s been a busy few weeks with party conference season in full swing and dominating news headlines.

CPRE attended both the Labour and Conservative party conferences to ensure the issues facing our countryside and rural communities are top of the next government’s agenda.

This has never been more important, particularly as this week the government passed an amendment to key legislation that gives the Secretary of State arbitrary powers to override development plans that were democratically approved by local communities.

2024 is looking to be the year of an era-defining election, with the new government facing a myriad of environmental crises as well as a broken housing market. Our newly-launched manifesto for the next UK government outlines four key areas of priority for the countryside, climate, communities and wildlife – read it in full here.

Earlier this week, we published our new report on Local Green Spaces. Our research shows that despite an increase in Local Green Space designations, many deprived areas across the country are still missing out - find out more below.

With October drawing to a close and autumn upon us, we hope you find time to enjoy the seasonal changes in your local countryside or green space. Nature writer Alexandra Pearce-Broomhead shares what to look out for – scroll down to read more.

More Local Green Spaces, but deprived areas still lacking, our report shows

Our newly-launched 2023 Local Green Spaces (LGS) report shows that there has been an increase in LGS designations, but deprived communities remain under-served. We’re calling for the designation process to be standardised to encourage people to make use of this vital legislation – read more below.

Tell us about your favourite local green space

Our green spaces are vital. That's why we want to shout as loud as we can about their value to people, climate and nature – but we need your help. Send us a video of you in your favourite park or green space by 24 October for our #LoveGreenSpaces project and be in with a chance to win a £50 Patagonia voucher!

Free Wills Month is back in October

Having a will gives you the peace of mind that comes from clearly outlining your wishes and reducing ambiguity for your loved ones. If this is the right time for you to write your will, then do consider our free will-writing service from our trusted partner, Farewill. While there is no obligation, many supporters do choose to remember CPRE in their will and it is an incredible way to show your love for the countryside and to ensure that it is protected.

A country journal of a Blackwoman: ‘whose blood runs with the tides’

October is Black History Month and we want to celebrate the diversity of our countryside. Writer, artist, teacher and creative Sheree Mack shares with us about cultivating a sense of belonging through displacement, her deep-rooted connection with nature, and returning to the sea. Read Sheree's story below.

Wildlife to look out for in October

We see autumn really peak during the month of October. Apples are picked in orchards, the last of the blackberries are plucked from the hedgerows and foragers hunt for fungi in the woods. Find out what other treats are in store for your next exploration of your local countryside or green space.
