Letter from the Mayor
Dear Washingtonians,
We are one month into a beautiful fall in DC: the weather is cooler, the trees are changing color, and the leaves are beginning to fall. And while our trees and leaves are a beautiful sight, we know that when the leaves fall onto our streets and sidewalks, they can become a hazard. ???
We are proud to have a free and aggressive leaf cleaning program that services neighborhoods across DC. This year?s leaf collection program [ [link removed] ] will kick off on Monday, October 30.
And this year, the Department of Public Works (DPW) has updated the leaf collection process to make it more responsive and efficient. You will remember that in previous years, you received a brochure in the mail that predicted when DPW would be in your neighborhood to pick up leaves. This year, instead of sending out a set schedule, DPW will let you know two weeks in advance when we are going to be in your neighborhood. This will allow us to be more responsive to conditions on the ground.
The leaf collection tracker will be updated every Friday with precise information on scheduled collection. Residents can check the schedule using the online leaf tracker at dpw.dc.gov [ [link removed] ] or by calling the Leaf Line at (202) 671-LEAF?(5323). In addition to the trackers, we will have teams going out two weeks in advance with door hangers to let neighbors know that it is time to start raking your leaves into the tree box.
In addition to these changes, we have some new equipment. We added more leaf blowers, more leaf vac trucks, more dump trucks, and three new buckets that will speed up the process.
When you see our DPW teams out in your neighborhood, please thank them for all they do year-round, but especially during the fall and winter, to keep our city safe and clean.
Sincerely,
Muriel Bowser
