San Jose/Evergreen Federation of Teachers demand healthcare for part-time faculty
Dozens of faculty, students, labor, and community allies took part in a boisterous rally last Friday in front of the headquarters of the San Jose-Evergreen Community College District in downtown San Jose. Despite negotiating for nearly a year to secure healthcare for part-time faculty, the district has refused to budge.
With 100% reimbursement for employer costs eligible to be covered by the state of California, faculty called out the district for causing the needless suffering of hundreds of part-time faculty, impacting not only their health and the health of their families, but their ability to deliver a quality education to their students.
With headlines running across the Bay Area calling the district ‘immoral’, the faculty are demanding the district immediately change course and provide the healthcare part-time faculty deserve. Watch and share this hard-hitting video on the event to help keep up the pressure.
Recognizing Campus Parity Week – October 23-27
Campus Parity Week (formerly Campus Equity Week) is a time of education and activism that draws attention to the working conditions of faculty working on temporary, low-paid contracts, who now constitute the majority of college instructors.
Officially the date for Campus Parity Week is October 23-27, but what’s more important is that campus communities (faculty, students, staff, and administrators) get the word out this fall about the need to secure healthcare for part-time faculty.

Hundreds attend the CFT Senate Candidate Forum
Thanks to the hundreds of CFT members who attended the CFT Senate Candidate Forum last Saturday, including Adjunct Faculty United member Marlo Smith (pictured above), who was one of the rank-and-file members present who asked the candidates questions. The forum was an opportunity for CFT members to hear directly from the leading candidates in the race on how they would support public education and working people should they be elected to office. Look for more coverage, including a video, in the coming days.
CFT Back to School tour wraps up
This week the CFT Back to School tour concluded with a wonderful visit with the students, educators, and staff at Northridge Middle School in LAUSD. A huge thanks to the talented students who greeted CFT leaders with a mariachi performance and to the UTLA members who made the event so special.
This year CFT leaders visited over two dozen schools and worksites in every corner of the state to listen to CFT members about what they need to be successful in their work.
CFT President Jeff Freitas statement on the overturning of California’s assault weapons ban
CFT President Jeff Freitas released this statement following the overturning of California’s assault weapons ban, calling out the judge who made the ruling for putting our students, school workers, and schools at risk.
“This extremist judge has made our communities and schools less safe and has put students’ and workers’ lives in harm’s way with his decision to overrule what is widely considered an important and effective law,” said Freitas in the statement.
