“Political advertising spending on digital platforms like Facebook and Google is at record levels. But the transparency on these platforms has not kept up. This means bad foreign actors are able to launch disinformation campaigns and remain anonymous while doing so. We need Congress to step up and support the Honest Ads Act and stop these attacks on the American people.”

John,
$1 billion.
Presidential candidates and outside groups have already spent more than that amount on political advertising this election cycle, with a hefty chunk of that going to digital ads. And, by the end of this election cycle, spending on digital ads alone is set to top $1 billion.
The worst part? These ads aren’t held to the same disclosure standards as political ads run on radio and television, potentially allowing foreign actors to illegally influence American politics anonymously.
Luckily, there is a clear solution to remedy this: the Honest Ads Act — the best first step to stopping hidden foreign disinformation campaigns in our elections — would implement a disclosure system for paid, online political advertising, which would bring digital advertising up to par with television and radio.
We just need Congress to act.

We recently looked at the ad databases of the largest tech companies — Facebook, Google, Twitter, and Snapchat — and found that their piecemeal, voluntary approaches to stopping these disinformation campaigns are woefully inadequate.
That’s why we need Congress to step up and pass meaningful solutions, like the Honest Ads Act, to create real transparency and give the American people more reliable and uniform information.
