Dear John,

You may have seen our recent petition on ‘points-based’ immigration.

Restrictions on vital workers are set to come into force in 2021.

This policy is one of the many areas in which our exit from the EU is still in flux, and there is still everything to play for.

We have a chance to shape the process of Brexit in this crucial transition year. We need to act now, while we can still have our say.

Sign the petition, and let your MP know you support freedom of movement.

I believe dividing people into “skilled” and “unskilled” is an arbitrary and unhelpful way to form immigration policy.

We need people to drive taxis and clean hospital just as much as we need doctors and nurses.

Without people coming to the UK to improve themselves, we couldn’t sustain quality British industry and quality British jobs.

And what’s more, we’d lose out on all the would-be scientists, professors or barristers who came to the UK as “unskilled workers”.

I don’t believe a junior nurse, working long hours for little pay, is unskilled. I don’t believe a dedicated home-carer, who tends to an elderly patient around the clock, is unskilled. Neither, do I think, are hospital porters or ambulance drivers.

A recent study by the IPPR tells us as much. Two-thirds of vital EU health and social care workers would not be allowed to contribute to our country under the proposed new rules.

With the Home Office losing experienced civil servants and the coronavirus threatening global trade, the need for a compassionate and comprehensive immigration plan has never been more urgent.

We need to show our MPs we love British jobs, British industry and British culture. And that means we love immigrants.

Join me in campaigning to maintain our vital local services, and their essential staff – both foreign and British.

Join me in opposing points-based immigration.

Best wishes,

Cary Mitchell
