OJJDP Administrator Ryan?s New Blog Post Discusses Amplifying Youth Voices During Youth Justice Action Month

YJAM 2023 Quote from OJJDP Administrator Liz Ryan

In a new blog post, OJJDP Administrator Liz Ryan highlights Youth Justice Action Month and underscores OJJDP?s commitment to amplifying youth voices to improve the juvenile justice system. ?

President Joseph Biden proclaimed October National Youth Justice Action Month, encouraging Americans to observe this month by taking action to support our youth and by participating in appropriate ceremonies, activities, and programs in their communities.

Administrator Ryan?s blog discusses the YJAM kickoff webinar held on October 3 with OJJDP?s partners, the Coalition for Juvenile Justice and the National Juvenile Justice Network. The webinar focused on the wisdom young people bring to conversations about the challenges youth face.

YJAM 2023 Kickoff Webinar

The kickoff webinar launched 5 weeks of YJAM 2023 events, emphasizing a different message each week, drawn from our three priorities and the principles that ground our work:

  • Week 1?Treat Children as Children.
  • Week 2?Advance Racial Equity and Fairness.
  • Week 3?Open Up Opportunities for System-Involved Youth.
  • Week 4?Center Impacted Youth and Families.
  • Week 5?Serve Children at Home, With Their Families, in Their Communities.

Administrator Ryan explains why this observance is especially significant for OJJDP, stating that ?justice for youth is the motivation for everything we do. We are committed to ensuring their welfare and providing opportunities and tools that expand their chances for success.?
