In the 2022–23 school year, PEN America recorded 3,362 instances of book bans in public school classrooms and libraries. These bans removed student access to 1,557 unique book titles, the works of over 1,480 authors, illustrators, and translators.
The media has widely covered bans in Florida and Texas, but it’s not limited to those states alone. Even states led by Democrats, like California, Michigan and New York, have seen book bans enacted by local governments and schools.
Senator Brian Schatz and Representative Jamie Raskin have introduced a resolution to stop book bans and defend the right to read. Critically, H. RES. 733 & S. RES. 372 affirms the rights afforded public schools and libraries to protect students, parents, and teachers from the right-wing funded fanatical extremists pedaling hate. Passing this resolution will help send a strong message to fanatical extremist groups attempting to stifle diverse perspectives and challenge the fundamental principles of our democracy.
