STATS FOR STORIES (SFS)

 Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week 2023 begins on Sunday, the day we also celebrate the Incandescent Light Bulb and Nut Day. In October we observe Energy Awareness Month, Disability Employment Awareness Month, Diversity Awareness Month, Italian American Heritage Month, Polish-American Heritage Month, and Seafood Month.

Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week: October 22-28

The Annual Business Survey counted 1,151,413 U.S. minority firms with 9,855,518 employees and $357.4 billion in annual payroll in 2020. The White House just issued this proclamation.

The Incandescent Light Bulb (1879): October 22-23

In 1879, Thomas Edison and his team made a light bulb with a carbonized filament of uncoated cotton thread that lasted 14.5 hours, long enough to light a home.

National Nut Day: October 22

According to foreign trade stats, U.S. exports of nuts were valued at $9.3B in 2020, up from $4.9B in 2010. Imports were $2.9B in 2020, up from $1.5B in 2010.

Global Diversity Awareness Month: October

Diversity is all the ways in which we differ: race, ethnicity, gender, age, marital status, sexual orientation, parental status, educational background, etc.

Italian-American Heritage and Culture Month: October

The  American Community Survey estimated 16 million people or 4.8% of the total 333.3 million U.S. population in 2022 reported Italian ancestry.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month: October

The  American Community Survey estimated that 9.8M noninstitutionalized civilians with a disability in the U.S. were employed and 1.0M were unemployed in 2022.

National Energy Awareness Month: October

There were 3,856 U.S. electric power generation stations with 124,532 paid employees and an annual payroll of $15.9B in 2021, according to the County Business Patterns report.

National Seafood Month: October

The County Business Patterns counted 10,894 establishments, $4.94B annual payroll, and 94,456 employees in U.S. fishing, seafood and marina industries in 2021.

Polish-American Heritage Month: October

The 2022 American Community Survey estimated the U.S. population at 331.9M. About 8.2M (roughly 2.5%) reported Polish ancestry.
