Tell Facebook:

"American democracy cannot afford another U.S. election that is deeply polluted by false information spread on online platforms. Facebook must reverse its policy on political advertising and reject ads that feature manifestly false content."

John,

Facts are under attack. Donald Trump’s war on truth is really a war on seniors―and it’s being fought on Facebook.

Trump is using his Facebook ads to distort his own record on Social Security and Medicare. The truth of his policies would be devastating to his key voting bloc, so he's working with Facebook to obscure it.

According to media reports, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has held at least two secret meetings with Donald Trump in the lead up to this year’s presidential election, and (coincidentally?) Facebook is allowing demonstrably false ads to run on its platform, allowing the Trump campaign to manipulate the American people and our democracy.

We won’t have a fair Presidential election this year if Facebook is putting its thumb on the scale for Donald Trump and congressional Republicans. And we can’t afford a repeat of 2016.

Tell Facebook: Immediately reverse your policy on political ads and reject those with demonstrably false content.

Trump’s war on truth has many fronts. Just yesterday, his administration held a briefing on the coronavirus and forbade audio or video recordings of that briefing. The Trump administration is prioritizing PR over the truth, at the expense of the American people’s safety. Social media corporations shouldn’t abet Trump’s war on truth. But that’s exactly what Facebook’s policy is doing.

In the social media age, disinformation campaigns are distorting the “facts” that we as a society accept as truths. We know, and our intelligence agencies have confirmed, that Donald Trump was elected thanks at least in part to a disinformation campaign run by Russian operatives. And since then, these same tactics have been used by the right-wing to increasingly divide the American people.

The American people demand fair elections free from lies and disinformation. Tell Facebook to reject political ads containing false content.

Together, we must fight back against the right-wing disinformation complex that’s systematically using lies on Facebook to bend American perceptions. The future of our democracy is at stake.

Thank you,

Michael Phelan
