One thing this slate of Democrat presidential candidates has accomplished has been to spur a national head-scratching about how we got to where we are today. Have the radicals always been among us? Were we asleep at the wheel if they were? Amity Shlaes' new book, Great Society: A New History, is a fascinating journey through the 1960s' shift in ideology that created what we are seeing on the debate stage. Shlaes reintroduces characters whom we all know (Lyndon Johnson, John Kennedy), and she fleshes out other actors who played huge roles in the move toward a "Great Society." (Speaking of actors, you will be surprised to see where Ronald Reagan entered the conversation.) Knowing this history will help us analyze today's political realities and do what must be done to rescue the America of our founding. “When you compare the two progressive impulses of our past, the 1930s New Deal, 1960s Great Society, which costs us more? … People think New Deal was so socialist, but Great Society costs us more,” says Amity Shlaes, author of the new book, “Great Society: A New History.”

“Why does it matter? Because even a little bit of socialism takes us toward a lot of socialism,” she adds. On today’s Daily Signal podcast, Shlaes breaks down why the 1960s were so radical, and the long-term results of that decade’s radical policies.
