Dear Friends, While food insecurity may not be as visible as it was at the beginning of the pandemic, the end of pandemic related support has a lot of our neighbors struggling to put food on their tables. We are in the midst of a hunger crisis. Pandemic related assistance was proven to not only improve food security, but also reduce poverty. SNAP Emergency Allotments, the extra money people received each month to help purchase food, reduced poverty by 10% and child poverty by 14%. Since this support ended, 30% of Philadelphians have had less to spend on groceries at a time when the cost of food has remained high. Any progress that was made these past few years, is gone. Philadelphia’s child food insecurity rate is 25.5% which is double the national average, and we continue to see an increased need for food distribution programs, at the same time that these programs are struggling to keep up with demand. We know hunger is preventable, but we all must work together to create meaningful change. Here are some actions you can take today towards ending hunger. |
