Disability Advocacy at Baylor Community Field Day

Last weekend, I was the honorary guest at the Community Field Day at McLane Stadium. Baylor University hosted the event in collaboration with the National Down Syndrome Society, Heart of Texas Down Syndrome Network, and Special Olympics Texas. The event celebrated the strength and spirit of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Participants displayed their skills in football, cheerleading, soccer, and basketball, highlighting the community's power and the athletes' resilience.

ImageMy son, Alex, was one of the many participants at the field day. Born with Down syndrome, he is both an Eagle Scout and an influential voice in the disability community, exemplifying determination and accomplishment. We enjoyed our time at McLane Stadium and eagerly anticipate future events as we continue our advocacy for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

In Congress, I am an original cosponsor and advocate of H.R. 3111, the "Words Matter Act." This legislation would update U.S. Code, removing the term “mentally retarded” and replacing it with more appropriate language with terminology befitting today. Words have significant power, and the disability community ought to have language that reflects the dignity deserved.

Speaker's Race

Over a week has passed, and the House of Representatives still hasn't elected a new speaker. Last Friday, Congressman Jim Jordan (OH-4) was elected by the House Republican Conference as Speaker-designate. However, over the last week Congressman Jordan has not managed to secure a majority of votes on the House floor.

ImageOn Monday evening, I extended my full support to my friend Jim Jordan in a statement, “Jim Jordan is a well-respected and dedicated voice within the Republican Conference who I am honored to serve alongside. His unwavering commitment to conservative principles, tireless work ethic, and proven leadership make him a strong and steady choice for the role of Speaker. Under Jim Jordan’s leadership, I am confident that House Republicans will continue to strengthen America’s economy, prioritize the safety of our citizens, demand accountability in our federal government, and secure a future firmly rooted in the principles of freedom.”

Jim knows that he has my unwavering support as he seeks a pathway forward for our Conference. I am not in favor of putting a pause on this issue by passing a resolution to empower a speaker pro tempore for the near future. It's crucial to install a new speaker since Congress must soon pass legislation to fund the federal government and address critical domestic and international issues.

Unwavering Support

Congress must present a united front in supporting Israel. Hamas' attacks have resulted in over 1,400 deaths, including 30 Americans. Additionally, Hamas is believed to have taken more than 200 hostages, including a number of Americans, to discourage the Israeli military from using lethal force against them. With several U.S. citizens still unaccounted for following these attacks, the United States should provide Israel with all necessary support to ensure the safety of its citizens, rescue the hostages, and neutralize the threat posed by Hamas.

ImageThroughout the United States, Hamas sympathizers demonstrations have taken place. On Wednesday, several protests converged on the Capitol complex, causing disruptions in Congressional Office Buildings. While demonstrators have the right to voice their opinions, the United States firmly supports Israel and its right to defend its citizens. Additionally, radical ideologues attempting to intimidate Members of Congress will not deter us. We are committed to ensuring Israel has the resources necessary to dismantle Hamas and protect Israeli sovereignty.
