John, BREAKING: Sidney Powell, a former attorney for Donald Trump, has pled guilty to her role in the multifaceted criminal conspiracy to take copies of voting system software from Coffee County, Georgia. Powell, along with Trump and additional operatives that included local GOP officials, conspired to overturn the 2020 presidential election, including by breaching and copying information from the county’s election systems in January 2021. Copies of the software that runs the voting machines in Georgia and other states were then covertly distributed to an unknown number of Trump supporters and election deniers. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis cited the crimes of computer trespass, computer theft, and computer privacy invasion as principal crimes underpinning the Georgia Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) case. Powell’s plea will be a very important step in prosecuting the case, but it won’t prevent Trump’s allies from using the voting system software to disrupt or subvert the 2024 elections. As many election security experts have warned, insecure election software enables hackers, thieves, and even foreign governments to install it on their own computers, create replicas of the voting systems, and probe them for weaknesses. They could use the software to fabricate evidence of rigged elections to sow disinformation or they could even develop exploits designed to manipulate results. We detailed these threats in an essay for Slate, co-authored with Cliff Albright of Black Voters Matter, and Professor Rich DeMillo of Georgia Tech. READ AND SHARE: The Georgia Voting Machine Theft Poses a Direct Threat to the 2024 Election Consider this: If a laboratory were robbed of plutonium, we wouldn’t expect local law enforcement to apprehend only the burglars, and stop there. Federal law enforcement would investigate where the contraband has been distributed, who got it, and what they plan to do with it, prosecuting any criminal activity to protect the nation. This is why we need an investigation by the federal government to understand the full scope of this scheme and what threats this criminal enterprise poses to future elections, as well as protect the integrity of elections going forward. Free Speech For People will continue to shed light on voting system software theft until it is adequately addressed on the local, state, and federal level. We won’t rest until we can be sure that future elections can be conducted freely, fairly, and securely. Thank you for continuing to stand with us.
