U.S. Immigration Courts See a Significant and Growing Backlog - More than 2 million cases are pending in U.S. immigration courts. This backlog has more than tripled since the start of fiscal year 2017. The effects of the backlog are significant and widespread. The backlog causes delays and poses challenges for noncitizens whose cases are being heard in immigration courts as well as for attorneys, immigration judges, and court staff. They also prolong the removal from the U.S. of those who do not have valid claims to remain. The Government Accountability Office reports on the challenges facing these courts and how to address them.

Cornyn Calls Out Iran for Bankrolling Hamas - Tuesday on the floor, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) called out Iran for providing Hamas with the money, weapons, and military training used to carry out their unprovoked attack on Israel and warned Iran not to use the war as an opportunity to escalate. “It doesn’t matter if Iran called the plays for the attack or knew about the specific timing. Tehran has bankrolled Hamas’ arsenal and its capabilities, and is cheering on Hamas as it kills innocent Israelis – men, women, and children. Iran gave Hamas the tools it needed to attack Israel and further its goal of eliminating the Jewish state...I hope that Iran and Hezbollah recognize the high cost of expanding this conflict," said Cornyn.

Sens. Cruz, Booker Introduce Bipartisan Bill Targeting Online Sales of Drugs Laced with Illicit Fentanyl - U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.) introduced bipartisan legislation to address the online sale of counterfeit pills laced with fentanyl. The Targeting Online Sales of Fentanyl Act would require the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to launch an investigation into the methods used to facilitate the online sale of fentanyl in coordination with assessing the effectiveness of federal law enforcement and online providers to combat the fentanyl crisis.

Rep. McCaul Joins Bill to Honor and Support Law Enforcement - Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) recently cosponsored the bipartisan National Law Enforcement Remembrance, Support, and Community Outreach Act with 29 other members of Congress. This bill would support and enhance programs of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, which honors the role of law enforcement in society by recognizing their sacrifices, valor, and mission to protect all Americans. It also increases efforts to bring educational programs on the importance of law enforcement to children and their communities.
