John —
When my family moved to Dallas, we fell in love with this vibrant community and its traditions. One of our favorite traditions is our yearly trip to the Texas State Fair.
Today, I'm thinking about everyone injured or forced to flee last Saturday. Even when lives are not lost, gun violence traumatizes our communities and poisons time we should spend in celebration with our friends and families.
The epidemic of gun violence has touched everyone in this country. No place — whether it be a school, a supermarket, or a state fair — is safe. We do not have to accept this.
I’ve seen too many preventable deaths and too much suffering due to firearms. For me, working to end the epidemic of gun violence is more than an academic pursuit or my vocation. It’s personal.
I’ve lost family members to gun violence and as a trauma surgeon, I routinely cared for gunshot victims of all ages, races, and walks of life — and I’ve had to deliver devastating news to far too many families. It’s what inspired me to run for Congress and fight for change.
We’re not powerless to create life-saving change, John. But passing meaningful gun safety reform and allowing our communities to heal from the collective trauma of gun violence can not happen without your help. Will you sign this petition to stand with me in the fight against gun violence? >> [link removed]
