The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) system is failing our most vulnerable: low-income seniors and people with disabilities. Current regulations exclude individual recipients with assets over $2,000 ($3,000 for couples), leaving them financially vulnerable on a max benefit of $914 a month, which is well below the poverty line and often serves as their sole source of income.
SSI aims to provide financial relief for people with disabilities, but its archaic rules—which have not been updated in nearly 40 years—trap beneficiaries in poverty. Surviving on $914 a month, while penalized for saving over $2,000, is untenable.
That's why Senators Sherrod Brown and Bill Cassidy have introduced the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act. This bill would raise the asset limit to $10,000 for individuals and $20,000 for couples, while excluding retirement savings from asset calculations.
The proposal not only has bipartisan support, but wide-reaching support (PDF) from the American public, major business organizations, and religious groups. Let's not allow outdated policies hold back our seniors and disabled people any longer.
Sign and send the petition: Tell Congress to pass the SSI savings penalty elimination act now and help SSI beneficiaries break the cycle of poverty. Take a stand for dignity, fairness, and opportunity—because everyone deserves a shot at a secure future.
