October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month – and here in Washington State, we know that gender-based violence is an emergency. Twenty percent of murders and more than fifty percent of assaults are cases of domestic violence.
During the 2023 legislative session, WA Senate Democrats passed critical legislation to support survivorsand reform our legal system. From ensuring that guns are immediately removed from the possession of people charged with domestic violence, to increasing the statute of limitations for sex crimes and extending the program supporting strangulation survivors, we’re strengthening legal protections for survivors at every point.
Our approach this session to addressing the plague of domestic violence was comprehensive. In light of federal budget cuts, Senate Democrats invested $64 million to preserve important services for survivors. We have more work to do to protect everyone in Washington State. But we know that Washington Senate Democrats will always fight for survivors of gender-based violence.
If you, or a loved one, are looking for support, check out the Washington State Coalition on Domestic Violence or you can call or text the National Domestic Violence Hotline 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 800-799-7233.
