John, when I said I wanted to be a part of history, this isn't exactly what I had meant ⬇️.
It's been over two weeks since Kevin McCarthy lost his position as Speaker of the House. And I wish I could say this was the first instance of Republicans not being able to govern, but being in Congress for less than a year, I've seen enough carelessness, enough wrongdoing, enough disregard for our people to last a lifetime.
FIRST: On the night freshmen like me were supposed to be sworn in, Republicans couldn't come to a consensus on who should be Speaker of the House. What followed was a five-day, fifteen vote fiasco that ultimately led Kevin McCarthy to the speakership.
THEN: After months of Republican-induced chaos, including narrowly avoiding defaulting on our debt AND a government shutdown, Kevin McCarthy became the first Speaker to be removed from the position – by his own party – in congressional history.
NOW: History is repeating itself. Republicans have, yet again, failed to successfully elect a Speaker. After over two weeks of petty political games, we are still no closer toward accomplishing the congressional work we were elected to do. |
