Schools across our nation are struggling to rebuild and function due to climate disasters, and kids are paying the price.
Less than three weeks ago, over 300 hundred schools in NYC were affected by flash flooding, and over the summer, countless schools across the Midwest and Northeast were forced to close due to sweltering heat.
Heatwaves like the ones this summer are shown to negatively impact students’ test scores, and the impacts are even further reaching when events like floods and hurricanes damage schools’ infrastructure.
Many school districts can’t afford the cost of private insurance, and for those who can, insurance money rarely covers the full cost of damages. The result: Schools are spending extended periods of time out of commission leaving school districts to reconfigure education for thousands of students at a time.
These disruptions wreak havoc on students’ learning, especially students who are disabled, low-income, or a racial minority — we can’t stand by and watch.
