Dear John,
Wealthy and powerful individuals are increasingly using the law to evade scrutiny by filing strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs)—meritless suits that entangle, exhaust, and ultimately silence media outlets, individual journalists, civil society groups, and activists.
In Central and Eastern European nations, where rule of law is relatively weak, the region’s citizens have suffered the consequences as newsrooms retreat and self-censor under this onslaught. But journalists are fighting back for the sake of their profession and for the fundamental right to know.

In January 2024, Bangladesh will hold a parliamentary election for 300 seats in its national legislative body, the Jatiya Sangsad (JS). Freedom House has identified internet shutdowns, social media and website blocks, and possible harassment and arrests as key digital interference issues to watch ahead of election day

The 2024 Mark Palmer Prize: Call for Nominations

Freedom House is seeking nominations for the 2024 Mark Palmer Prize, which recognizes exceptional achievements to protect and advance democracy by diplomats and officials serving in intergovernmental institutions. The prize is made possible through the generosity of the Mark and Sushma Palmer Legacy Fund, in loving memory of former Freedom House trustee Ambassador Mark Palmer.
