With only a sliver of moonlight overhead, a shadow glides across murky waters. Below the surface, a long, powerful tail propels the black caiman forward. And above, sharp eyes scan the banks—watching, waiting.
These are the highly specialized eyes of Amazonia’s largest predator. Primed for nocturnal hunting, black caimans can see their prey on even the darkest of nights. And beyond the hunt, their eyes play another important and unexpected role: they’re key to caiman conservation.
Locating these well-camouflaged reptiles during their active hours after nightfall would be nearly impossible, were it not for the red reflection their eyes cast when met with light. Using a spotlight to find that glow, our conservation scientists are working to better understand black caimans, so we can protect them from threats, including the illegal wildlife trade and climate change.
You make these crucial efforts possible through our Amazonia Conservation Hub. Discover more about caimans and other fascinating nocturnal wildlife, and join us as we light up the night during fun and festive HalGLOWeen celebrations.

SMELLS LIKE A HERO
|
When you think of rats, a superhero probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. African giant pouched rats might change that. Nicknamed “HeroRATs,” their strong sense of smell is helping to stop illegal wildlife trafficking, detect disease, and locate forgotten landmines. Meet Runa, an ambassador at the San Diego Zoo whose keen nose is sharing this impactful work with the world.

ELECTRIC SIXTH SENSE
|
Diving after dusk with their eyes and ears closed, platypuses rely on a unique sixth sense to help them find their food underwater. With about 40,000 electroreceptors in their bills, they pinpoint the location of their next meal by detecting subtle electrical impulses generated by the movements of their prey. Splash in and explore how you’re fueling vital conservation efforts for these mysterious mammals.
