As I'm writing this message, Republicans in the House still have not chosen a new Speaker.
First they tried to elect Rep. Steve Scalise. When that didn’t work, the MAGA extremists made Rep. Jim Jordan their choice. With Jordan losing his second attempt in a vote just this morning, it looks likely they’ll have to find another candidate if the House is going to get the consensus needed for anyone to earn enough votes to win.
Here’s the deal: A handful of less extreme Republicans, several of whom were elected in districts that Joe Biden won, have voted against Rep. Jordan because they fear repercussions from voters in 2024.
That’s important.
If there is one thing that is abundantly clear to you and me, it’s that America cannot allow someone who has supported Trump’s Big Lie, encouraged the January 6th attack on the Capitol, or voted to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election become the next Speaker of the House.
Now we need to up the pressure by making sure every member of Congress knows it too, especially the Republicans. Demand all U.S. House members reject and vote against any insurrectionist for Speaker of the House.
147. That’s the number of Republican House members who voted to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and install Donald Trump as President.
Some of these lawmakers had knowledge of or were directly involved with the events leading up to the January 6th insurrection. Every one of them voted to throw out tens of millions of votes in order to install an authoritarian as president.
None of them, not a single one, should be rewarded with the honor of becoming Speaker and second in line for the presidency.
Insurrectionist Republicans, including Rep. Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise, have continued to threaten our democracy by supporting racist voter suppression laws and spreading disinformation to the American public about our election systems. The last place any one of them deserves to sit is in the Speaker’s chair.
American democracy cannot afford to have an insurrectionist as Speaker of the House ever, but with disinformation on social media skyrocketing and Trump leading in the GOP primary it’s never been more important to stop it from happening than it is right now.
