Rural communities are the backbone of our nation's food production, yet they face disproportionately high rates of food insecurity.
This nutrition gap not only jeopardizes their well-being but also results in increased healthcare expenses.

Studies underscore the vital link between consistent access to nutritious food and overall health. Conversely, limited access to healthy food contributes to chronic diseases, exacerbates mental health issues, and ultimately leads to higher healthcare costs, leaving families with less to spend on food. Shockingly, in 2021, approximately 11% of rural households experienced food insecurity, which directly correlates with health challenges like diabetes, asthma, and depression.
In the 2023 Farm Bill, Congress has a unique opportunity to empower rural communities by enhancing SNAP provisions:

grocery
prices

ensure
adequate
support
during
economic

diverse
groups,
including
older
adults,

veterans,

military
families.

Excluding
the
Basic
Allowance
for
Housing
from
the
gross
income
calculation
for
SNAP
eligibility
to
assist
more
military
families.
*
Supporting
SNAP
choice
and
affordable
access
to
nutritious
foods.
*
Adequately
funding
and
enhancing
state
employment
and
training
programs.
*
Ensuring
SNAP
beneficiaries
can
access
training
opportunities
based
on
best
practices.
*
Preventing
the
expansion
of
SNAP
work
requirements
to
better
support
participants
seeking
employment.
SNAP is a powerful solution to address food insecurity and its health consequences in rural areas. SNAP beneficiaries can save around $1,400 per year in healthcare expenses.
It's imperative that we stand with communities lacking access to food. Let's urge our lawmakers to bridge the nutrition gap and fortify SNAP benefits through the 2023 Farm Bill.
