After two weeks of stalled progress and chaos, it appears House Republicans still cannot get their act together.
Their latest selection for Speaker of the House, Rep. Jim Jordan, just failed (again) to get the votes needed to take the gavel. And for good reason. Jordan has a history of extremism:
Jim Jordan has a fraught relationship with democracy.
- He sought to overturn the 2020 Election results, refused to comply with several subpoenas in January 6 investigations, and amplified unhinged conspiracy theories.
Jim Jordan does not believe in compromise or bipartisan solutions.
- His far-right House Freedom Caucus uses a "my way or the highway" approach to governing, targeting essential immigration reforms and the Affordable Care Act.
Jim Jordan's voting record is at odds with the needs of everyday Americans.
- He voted against bipartisan legislation for disaster relief, aid for victims of 9/11, medical research funding, opioid treatment, and expanded medical benefits for veterans.
- He has pushed for radical plans that would make sweeping cuts to Social Security, and functionally destroy Medicare by raising the retirement age and slashing benefits.
- He also supports a nationwide abortion ban with zero exceptions.
House Democrats are ready to work across the aisle to lower costs for working families, to tackle climate change, and make our communities safer — but with a Speaker selection like Jordan and the chaos caucus running the show — that is not likely possible.
More soon,
Rick
