This is Veteran flight officer, Tom Royals. I decided to follow in my grandfather's footsteps to serve this great country when we were attacked on 9/11.
I remember it like it was yesterday. I was in my junior year math class when a plane hit the second tower. At that moment, I heard my calling and immediately applied to The United States Naval Academy.
Two quotes from my application letter -
1. I want to "earn the right to defend my country"
2. And that "When I die, I want to know that I have led a noble life in the service of God, country, and others."
With hard work and determination, I achieved that first one. However, I will spend the rest of my life serving YOU so that on the day I die, I'll have died a noble man.
