LAPD Sergeant Hit By Car While Trying To Stop Stolen Vehicle Released From Hospital

An LAPD sergeant who was hit by a vehicle last month while on duty was finally able to go home after spending weeks recovering in the hospital. Patrol Sergeant Vanessa Prentice was working in the early morning hours of Sept. 23 in Jefferson Park when she was attempting to stop a reported stolen vehicle. Moments later, a different car going past her near the corner of Jefferson Boulevard and Western Avenue struck her. She's been recovering ever since. On Monday, the Los Angeles Police Department posted a video on Instagram of an emotional Prentice leaving the hospital as her law enforcement family cheered her on. LAPD Chief Michel Moore praised the staff at Cedars Sinai Medical Center for saving her life. Moore said though Prentice has a long road to recovery, she's up for the task and said she truly has the "heart of lion."

Suspects Demand Property, Shoot Man Before Driving Off In Hollywood

A man was approached by a pair of suspects in a vehicle and shot while standing outside his car in Hollywood late Tuesday night. The incident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. near the intersection of Fountain Avenue and North La Brea Avenue. Investigators determined that the victim, described as a Black man between 30 and 35 years old, was approached by two male suspects in a vehicle who demanded his property. It was unclear if the victim gave the suspects any cash or belongings. As the suspects were leaving the scene, one of them fired at the victim, striking him at least once. Video showed two bullet holes on a driver-side window of a vehicle with blood dripping down the side. The victim was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

Man Shot Outside Tiny Home Development In North Hollywood

A man was hospitalized and is in critical condition Tuesday after a shooting outside of a tiny home development in North Hollywood. Officers from Los Angeles Police Department's North Hollywood Division responded at 2:21 a.m. to 6099 Laurel Canyon Blvd., east of the 170 Freeway and upon their arrival they found the victim suffering from gunshots wounds, LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman said. The victim, who Eisenman said was did not cooperate with police, was taken to a hospital. There was no suspect description.

LA Rams Cornerback Derion Kendrick Arrested For Unregistered Firearm

Police arrested Los Angeles Rams cornerback Derion Kendrick after discovering an unregistered firearm in his car. According to authorities, officers pulled over Kendrick at the intersection of Selma Avenue and Schrader Boulevard late Sunday night for having tinted windows that were darker than legally allowed. During the stop, officers saw an open container of marijuana and proceeded to search the vehicle. They found a gun that was later determined to be unregistered. While Kendrick was not booked into jail, he was cited for felony possession of a firearm in a vehicle and released early Monday morning. Rams Head Coach Sean McVay said he knew of the situation during a press conference on Oct. 16.

Four Arrested In Connection With Retail Thefts In Los Angeles County

Four suspects allegedly involved in multiple thefts from retail stores in Los Angeles, Carson, Lakewood and surrounding cities were arrested, the Los Angeles Police Department Organized Retail Crime Task Force announced Tuesday. Task force detectives executed two search warrants Thursday at unspecified residential locations in Los Angeles where Daronica Harris and Quenda Scott were both arrested, police said. Both suspects were booked for grand theft and held in lieu of $150,000 bail. Detectives conducted further investigation and arrested two additional suspects, one for an outstanding felony warrant, the other for identity theft, police said. The third and fourth suspects’ names were not made available. During a preliminary investigation, detectives discovered one loaded stolen firearm, approximately $1,800 in cash, smash-and-grab tools, along with multiple items stolen from the retail stores, police said. Employees of the victimized business identified their merchandise. Approximately $4,500 worth of stolen items have been returned, police said.

BMW Driver Arrested In Horrific Malibu Crash That Left 4 Dead, 2 Injured

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter following a horrific crash on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu that left four women dead and sent two others to the hospital. Authorities said the crash happened Tuesday around 8:30 p.m. when the suspect reportedly lost control of his BMW and slammed into multiple parked cars before ricocheting and fatally striking the victims, who officials said were standing on the side of the road. Investigators believe speed was a factor in the crash on the stretch of the highway known as "Dead Man’s Curve." "It’s tough. Everybody picks up their speed… this is a very heavily populated pedestrian area, so it’s one of those scary things where it’s like ‘Hey people, slow down,’" LA County Fire Capt. Sheila Kelliher-Berkoh said. The names of the victims have not been released. PCH remained closed between Carbon Canyon and Las Flores Canyon roads for the investigation.

Surveillance Video Shows Armed Man Raise Gun, Shoot At Connecticut Officer Point-Blank

A man who reportedly fired a weapon at a Hartford Police Department officer was fatally shot by the officer on Monday afternoon, city officials said. According to Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin, officers were called to the area of Westland and Barbour Streets for reports of an armed person in a vehicle who had been making threats. The vehicle, a silver Honda with Florida license plates, had been the subject of an earlier 911 call about someone brandishing a firearm at a car dealership, city officials said at a press conference on Monday. Bronin said he reviewed surveillance footage of the shooting and witnessed Hartford police officers attempt to pull the car over with their lights and sirens fully activated. Before the officer got out of his vehicle, a man got out of the passenger side of the Honda and began walking toward the back of the vehicle. As the officer approached, Bronin said, “You can see in the video this individual raises his arm with a handgun in it.” The man reportedly fired at the officer. There was “an exchange of gunfire,” Bronin said, and the man was shot. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Bronin.

'He Was Prepared To Kill As Many Cops As He Could': South Carolina Sheriff Describes Discovery During Domestic Violence Investigation

While they were investigating a domestic violence incident, deputies encountered a heavily-armed man who was “prepared to kill as many cops as he could,” the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said Sunday. No shots were fired and “no one got hurt,” Sheriff Leon Lott said in a news release. The incident happened last Friday, when deputies were investigating an incident involving domestic violence, according to the release. Information about where the incident happened was not available. During the investigation, deputies discovered that 43-year-old Zachary Tanaka had made threats to harm law enforcement officers, his wife, and his children, the sheriff’s department said. This prompted deputies to search Tanaka’s home, according to the release. During the search, deputies found anti-police propaganda, a makeshift barricade with sandbags, and many weapons with ammunition, according to the release. There was no word on the specific nature of the anti-police materials. The sheriff’s department shared photos from the search that showed multiple rifles and pistols. Information about how many guns were found, and if they were legally owned by Tanaka, was not available.

Crews Knock Out Fire At Vacant Home In Hollywood

Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters battled a fire at a two-story home under construction in Hollywood for over an hour Wednesday morning. Firefighters responded around 4:30 a.m. to 1547 N. Sierra Bonita Ave. south of Curson Avenue where they saw heavy flames at the vacant residence, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. It took over an hour to fully extinguish the flames, but fire crews were able to prevent the fire from damaging nearby homes and buildings. It took 69 firefighters 65 minutes to put out the fire. Fire department heavy equipment, including a bulldozer and excavator, has been brought in to lift and move massive amounts of smoldering debris. No injuries were reported.

Newsom Signs Bill OK'ing Speed Cameras In 3 SoCal Cities

Drivers in three Southern California cities could wind up receiving speeding tickets in the mail after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed off on a speed camera pilot program. Newsom approved AB 645, a bill that allows Glendale, Long Beach and Los Angeles, as well as Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco to install speed cameras in school zones and high-injury streets with speeding problems. The cameras would take a picture of a car's license plate and not the driver, which officials hope will address privacy concerns, if the vehicle is breaking the speed limit by 11 mph or more. First-time offenders would get a warning and then fines would start at $50. The program includes a provision which requires cities to reduce fines for those under the poverty line. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, speeding accounts for nearly a third of all traffic fatalities.

Bass, 6 LA City Council Members Continue Talks In D.C.

Mayor Karen Bass and a delegation of six City Council members put a “fix in motion” Tuesday after learning Los Angeles is at risk of losing more than $100 million in Veteran Affairs benefits — as part of the group’s second day of meetings to advocate for additional resources for the city. During a meeting with Secretary Denis McDonough of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, he informed city leaders that Congress wants to “claw back” money to balance the federal budget, but a “legislative fix could save it,” Bass told KNX News. “In addition, we learned that many cities have not utilized their (housing) vouchers. So, needless to say, I wanted to be the first in line to make sure that L.A. gets any unused vouchers that other cities don’t need,” Bass said. “…I’ll tell you why. There isn’t any city around that is dealing with the numbers (of homelessness) that we’re dealing with,” Bass added. The city delegation — including Council President Paul Krekorian and council members Bob Blumenfield, Eunisses Hernandez, Heather Hutt, Traci Park and Hugo Soto-Martinez — is in Washington to meet with White House officials and members of California’s congressional delegation.
