Kansas Student Test Scores Rise:
Here’s What They’re Saying
*"

* Kansas schools are finally turning around what had been a yearslong slide in student academic achievement [ [link removed] ].
* The data, which was released Tuesday [ [link removed] ], shows a slight decrease in the numbers of students scoring in the lowest two categories on both the English language arts and math state assessments.
* Still, the results are promising news after Kansas students’ academic achievement has fallen in recent years, especially in the years since the start of the pandemic.
* “It’s certainly trending in the right direction,” "[Watson]" told The Capital-Journal. “There is a lot of work left to do, and certainly we aren’t finished, but it’s encouraging to see math levels rebound toward the 2017 levels, and language arts back to 2021… the trends are favorable.”
*Here’s what they’re saying: *
“These results speak for themselves — when our schools have appropriate resources, our students grow and begin to thrive. Governor Kelly has fully funded schools for 5 years in a row and that investment is paying off. Now is not the time for us to take our foot off the gas, as Republican leadership would have us do. It’s time to stay the path and continue to support Kansas kids.”
*-Kansas State Senator Dinah Sykes, Senate Minority Leader*
“We are very encouraged by this year’s state assessment results. Our schools have been working hard to reverse the learning loss students nationwide experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, and we expect to see this positive trend continue. We know there is still much work to be done, but these results prove what we’ve always known to be true; Kansas schools work.”
*-Dr. Randy Watson, Commissioner of Education*
“In the Shawnee Mission School District, we work to ensure that every student exits high school prepared for college and career, with the interpersonal skills necessary for life success. The state assessment is an important measure of academic progress, and we are pleased to see that hard work and additional COVID relief resources are indeed making a difference, and that students across the state are making meaningful progress. All credit goes to our fantastic teachers and administrators, who are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure our students are successful.”
*-Dr. Michelle Hubbard, USD 512 Superintendent and
2024 Kansas Superintendent of the Year*
