I’m CREW’s research director, which means I oversee the team of CREW staff dedicated to digging into campaign finance filings, checking facts and getting deep into the weeds on issues from the 14th Amendment to dark money.

I’ve spent years researching money in politics and analyzing financial data about members of Congress, and I can tell you, I’ve never seen anyone with finances like the indicted serial fabulist Rep. George Santos.

Last week, we told you Santos was facing a new 23-count indictment alleging that he cheated donors, stole from his campaign and lied to Congress on previous financial disclosures. Then, we told you he was the *only* House member who has not yet filed his mandatory personal financial disclosure. And now that George Santos’s campaign filed a new FEC disclosure, we know a lot more.

– Santos had to give back $17,715 in contributions, leaving him with *negative* fundraising totals for the quarter
– He disclosed over $100,000 in debt
– 60% of his expenditures went to lawyers and himself
– He has less than $23,000 cash on hand

John, of all the money he’s spent driving his campaign into the red, his largest expenditure was a $20,000 legal bill to Dickinson Wright PLC, a Republican-leaning law firm. And despite making that hefty payment, he still owes the firm nearly $69,000.
