WIIS Releases its New Report on Advancing Gender Equality in Latin American and Caribbean Security Forces
On October 12, 2023 WIIS released its report, “Enhancing Security: Women's Participation in the Security Forces in Latin America and the Caribbean: Part II”, authored by Dr. Karin Johnston (Research Director, WIIS), Dr. Diorella Islas (Fellow, WIIS) and Larissa Abaunza (Deputy Research Manager, WIIS). This report, commissioned as part of a project supported by the U.S. Southern Command, examines progress in implementing gender equality and the Women, Peace and Security agenda in military and national police forces in 15 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Together with the findings in 14 countries in the 2020 WIIS “Enhancing Security” report, WIIS has established a baseline of data and best practices for Mexico and the 28 countries in the U.S. Southern Command’s area of responsibility.

Remembering Mahsa Amini: Women Journalists Advancing Women, Peace & Security Principles

Kathryn Pilgrim (WPS Lecturer and Journalist) and Dr. Joan Johnson-Freese (Senior Fellow, WIIS) look at the role of women journalists and their contributions through media to the Women, Peace and Security Agenda a year after Mahsa Amini's death. The authors discuss how news reporting, particularly women journalists, surrounding Amini’s death sparked social change, and garnered international media coverage.

On October 18, 2023 WIIS and SecurityWomen will host their London Conference on Security Reform through a Gender Lens. This event will feature distinguished experts in security, defense and gender and will highlight the different ways women are shaping security. The conference will feature lessons learned and paths forward for advancing gender equality in the world of defense and security.

Reinforcing the Women, Peace and Security Agenda Under the Spanish Presidency of the European Union

On October 17, 2023 SWIIS (WIIS Spain) in collaboration with The Spanish-French Friendship Association Mujeres Avenir, hosted an event aiming to assess the advancement and implementation of the Women, Peace and Security agenda. The event featured a discussion with Hélène Conway (Senator of the French Abroad), Eva María Ara Montojo (Security and Defense Studies and Coordination, Ministry of Defense) and Julia Borque Sierra (General Directorate of Communication, European Parliament Office in Spain), moderated by Eugenia Hernández (Director of UNINT, Intelligence Analysis Unit of the School of Economic Intelligence and International Relations of the UAM).

Elevating Women’s Voices – Promoting Gender Equality in Counterterrorism
On October 26, 2023 WIIS Brussels will host a discussion on gender and counter-terrorism. The event will commence with opening remarks from Dr. Isabelle Francois (President, WIIS Brussels) and Dr. Olaf Wientzek (Director of the Multinational Development Policy Dialogue Brussels, Konrad Adenauer Foundation) and will feature a presentation on women in counter-terrosim from Florence Ferrando (Senior Consultant on Security, Defense and New Technologies). A panel discussion with Camilla Bognoe (Senior Advisor on Anti-Terrorism Issues, Action Against Terrorism Unit, OSCE), Dr. Christiane Höhn (Principal Adviser to the European Union Counter-terrorism Coordinator, EU) and Ilham Makki (Ministry of Education, Iraq) will follow. The event will be moderated by Mona Koehler-Schindler (Steering Committee Member, WIIS Brussels).

Gender Mainstreaming: A Practical Guide
On October 18, 2023 WIIS Brussels will host their members only virtual training “Gender Mainstreaming: A Practical Guide”, with Andrea Tauta (Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights Advisor and Trainer, Butterfly Works) and Angelica Aràmbulo (Training Team, WIIS Brussels). This training is designed to equip participants with essential knowledge and practical skills in integrating gender perspectives into policies and practices. Through interactions and case studies, participants will learn how to apply gender mainstreaming principles to create more equitable and inclusive policies in workplaces.

On October 13 The Institute for Inner Economy in partnership with WIIS, and the University of California, Santa Cruz’s Center for Applied Values and Ethics in Advancing Technologies launched a 3-day training and retreat focused on resilience and wellbeing for leaders. Saahas Awards: Celebrating Women’s Role in Nurturing Peace in South Asia
WISCOMP is now accepting applications and nominations for the Saahas Awards. This award celebrates the innovative initiatives of people and organizations working to strengthen women’s role in peace building in South Asia. Individuals who have been working with women in protracted conflicts in South Asia are invited to submit stories of how they spoke out, stepped forward, and took action. Women who are ‘change agents’ in areas that have witnessed protracted conflict, are especially encouraged to apply. Applications will be accepted until November 15, 2023.

Call for Papers: Mediation through a Gender Lens: Perspectives from the Community to the International Level
WISCOMP's South Asian Journal of Peacebuilding, Peace Prints, invites submissions for an issue entitled "Mediation through a Gender Lens: Perspectives from the Community to the International Level". This edition will consist of academic essays, research articles of 5000 – 6000 words each, reflection pieces that bring forward perspectives from the field of 3000 – 5000 words and book discussions on women in mediation. WISCOMP specially encourage articles co-authored by scholars and practitioners across conflict zones. Deadline for abstract submissions is October 25, 2023.
