Breaking news: Jim Jordan, founder of the Freedom Caucus and one of the most extreme Republicans in Congress, narrowly missed being elected Speaker of the House – marking the final takeover of the Republican Party by far-right extremists.
Let us be clear: Not having a Speaker is bad for the country and for our democracy. Without a Speaker, everything comes to a halt. It means we can’t pass legislation or conduct the business of working for the American people. So there is real urgency to elect a Speaker and get back to work – but we simply cannot let extremists like Jim Jordan wield the gavel.
Jim Jordan was Donald Trump’s hand-picked man for the job, because Trump knows Jordan will always push his radical agenda. Jordan was one of Trump’s most important henchmen in the effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election. He was subpoenaed by the very institution he hopes to lead, but ignored them. He was also the author of the most aggressive nationwide ban on abortion, with zero exceptions for rape, incest or common miscarriage.
By putting forward Jim Jordan Speaker of the House, Republicans have chosen someone far outside what one would typically consider mainstream Republican: He voted to cut Social Security and privatize Medicare. And he has consistently voted against common-sense bipartisan legislation, including the PACT Act, which expanded health care to 3.5 million post-9/11 veterans and even aid to 9/11 victims themselves.
On top of that, Jordan’s priorities are disastrous for Michigan families, specifically: He voted against relief for the auto industry during the financial crisis of 2008, and voted against the Protecting the Right to Organize Act – sweeping legislation that would federally protect organizers rights to organize and form a union, as well as prevent employers from union busting. For our farmers, he had voted against every single Farm Bill that has come up during his time in Congress — quite a record when as Speaker he would have to be relied on to pass this year’s Farm Bill.
Lastly, Jim Jordan just simply doesn’t believe in governing: he has been one of the most ineffective members of Congress – never so much as managing to pass a single bill into law since he was elected almost two decades ago. But make no mistake: As Speaker of the House, Jim Jordan will have the power to push his far-right agenda and lean into the most extreme desires of the Republican party.
Democrats are willing to find a bipartisan way forward by working across the aisle to reopen the House, but in order to do that, we need a Speaker of the House who is ready to lead. Extremists like Jim Jordan don’t belong in leadership positions.
